“I wish all teachers were Jess. She sees me and talks to me like a person, and she’s not like a school teacher at all.”
- Ava, home-educated young person, 2026

About Jess king

Jess is a highly qualified and experienced teacher of 20 years, in the field of Literacy, Creative writing, Classical Mythology and Language Arts.

She has taught in a wide variety of settings from secondary schools to festival tents, museums to conferences, Zoom rooms and living rooms. Home educating her own neurodivergent children for the past 14 years, inspired her particular passion for creating learning spaces for people of different neurotypes to thrive, with an approach that has respect for children at its heart.

Jess has a passion for Storytelling as an art form, and Creative Writing as a therapeutic modality; her sister-project Feminine Wise uses storytelling and the creative arts to connect women and girls with Menstrual Cycle Awareness.

Jess is based in Catford, South East London.

“We are incredibly grateful for Jess and the positive impact she has had on our daughter’s learning journey. Her warm, kind, patient and dedicated approach has transformed the way our daughter engages with education.”
- Ana Maria and Christian, 2025

autonomous learners

I meet every young person exactly where they are, and nurture who they are through their own creative expression — in writing, in speaking, and in the ways they naturally make meaning.

Wherever possible, I work within each learner’s existing interests and strengths, using what already engages them as the foundation for growth. From there, we expand outward: new texts, new writing forms, new skills, all introduced at a pace that feels achievable and aligned with their personal goals.

My aim is to help students become confident, autonomous learners who understand their own voice and know how to use it with clarity and purpose.

“It is impossible to convey in a short testimonial how important Jess has been to my dyslexic daughter’s literacy journey for the past five years. Her child-centred mode of delivery has given my daughter the confidence and skills she needs to succeed.”

- Kerry, mum of formerly home-educated student moving into mainstream, 2026

GCSE Teaching & Parallel Tutoring

I teach GCSE English Language, English Literature, and Classical Civilisation in a way that prioritises creativity and a genuine engagement with stories and ideas.

I also work with students who are studying at school, offering focused and tailored parallel tutoring to boost their understanding and skills.

“Can’t believe it’s his last lesson with you! You’ve been amazing, brilliant and calming when I’ve felt blinkered and anxious about the future. I am so grateful. Thank you.”
- Anna, Mum of home-educated GCSE student, 2025

Exam Coaching

I support students in developing the practical skills and steady confidence needed for successful GCSE exams.

As a former exam‑board marker, I help students understand assessment criteria, refine their writing, and build effective strategies for planning, timing, and execution.

The focus is always on clarity, calm preparation, and empowering students to show what they can do.

“Jess is the first English tutor we had where we could see real changes in the children’s skills and confidence, and that after only three exam sessions. Jess is very experienced and offered individual feedback that helped them to improve without knocking their confidence. As a result, everyone went into the exam well prepared.”
- Katrin, Mum of home-educated young people, 2025
